New Orleans & The Gulf Coast
I usually try not to spout off about what Obama or others in the Democratic Party need to say or do during this election, what the fuck do I know, but this is one issue that I am angry over the lack of attention it gets. I know that many people and organizations are working hard to rebuild their lives and cities, but I still cannot fathom why New Orleans and the poor areas of the Gulf Coast are not used as a lead-off to talk about the consequences of cronyism, racism, classism, fake politicking, all subjects we've been railing against during this election cycle. I'm glad that the issue was vaguely mentioned a few times last night, but the question of accountability for the levee failures and subsequent horrifying response from FEMA are still just as big of an embarrassment to this country as the executive decisions made in Iraq. I know this is a difficult issue, but so are racism and religion, which Senator Obama had no problem confronting head-on, and similarly, the situation in the Gulf Coast is a microcosm of so many other problems we must face as a country now and in the coming years. Feeling too uninformed and overwhelmed, I have been reluctant to take this on as a topic to write about on most levels, but I'm learning and spending more time on the details. I hope Obama and his staff have been doing the same.
Broken Levees, Broken Lives
(*disclaimer* let's not dick around here, John McCain doesn't give a shit about rebuilding New Orleans for anyone other than his corporate friends, which is one of the reasons Obama has to publicly address the issues the Gulf Coast is facing)
