The Aging Elephant

Aravosis bravely broaches the obvious elephant in the room: Why aren't we talking about the issues of the elderly, at all? In an election year?

I share John's concerns, as my grandmother has a rapidly progressing form of dementia. I know how someone can go from harmless forgetfulness to needing 24 hour care in a matter of a few short months. One in seven over the age of 70 has some form of dementia/Alzheimer's.

SeniorJournal.com...About 3.4 million people, or 13.9 percent of the population age 71 and older, have some form of dementia – that’s one out of seven – says a new study noting that the prevalence of dementia increases dramatically with age. Just about 5% of those aged 71 to 79 are afflicted but that jumps to 37.4% after reaching age 90.

Without pressing on the obvious odds that we could be gambling with, I must say I am just as concerned about McCain's disregard for the elderly as I am about his age. However, these stats are why his VP selection will be crucial to the election. His supporters may not admit it, but even they need to feel comfortable with the person chosen as if they are the one running for President. Jeb or Condi are pretty young by comparison...
