In dealing with uncertainty, there is another aspect to the horror the rural Chinese have to face:
The Chengdu Population and Family Planning Committee in the capital of Sichuan province announced Monday that families whose child was killed, severely injured or disabled in the quake can get a certificate to have another child. This is where China is still at, even in the midst of the devastation. As my grandmother has said (paraphrasing), "you young folks have the luxury of building a family and choosing a mate not out of necessity, but out of choice. That's great, but don't take it for granted." Many still don't have that luxury globally. I can't imagine thinking about trying to procreate and raising a child out of necessity under such tragic and trying circumstances.
